really getting sick of everyone telling me i should be afraid
Admin replied to MEXobiologist's topic in Free-For-All
people place way too high a premium on fight of flight, which generally speaking can indeed save one's life in a given set of situations that become narrower and narrower as we progress as a species. they allow those instincts to govern them at inappropriate times, when other paths would serve them, and their continued existence, better. a disagreement isn't life threatening. but people will jack it up to that, and be proud of themselves for doing so. Even as it erodes their ethical selves and creates a generally more fearful, and less prepared, psyche. common sense is perhaps that ability to look for that one simple strand in an otherwise complicated issue and begin to untangle and make sense of it. too many people I think substitute fight of flight for common sense. Which causes them not to look for anything, or try to untangle anything, but rather to attack it or run from it. -

you know how - like a four-year-old will try to heighten everything to get what they want? so - people are four years old now. just - everyone. it's because of the internet. because of the internet, everyone is four. -

well, each boss has to look good to their boss, which means they have to get the most done. So, like one boss wants me to do one thing so they look good, but another boss wants me to do another thing so that they look good. and you can't always do those at the same time, or get them both done by the end of the day. It's not always selfish interest. Some bosses are just out to do their job the best they can. But a lot of times there's 2-3 competitive interests that want me to do things and it falls to the hierarchy to decide which thing takes precedence. Almost always it's me going "we should do this" and them looking at me like I'm from Mars, then coming back at me with "we're going to do that thing you said" but just - making it sound like it was their idea instead of mine. basically if they just let me be, shit would get done. But - like then they couldn't take credit for it because they didn't direct anything. Managers are encouraged to manage. Whether it's required or not. So if a company has too much of that, it tends to slow the process rather than speed it up. but - like I have yet to meet a business that seems to understand that very basic premise.

THAT DUDE FROM TWD? WHY IS THAT?

I've had some great bosses and some terrible bosses and all kinda stuff in between. My current job in fact, I've had a few of the best bosses I've ever had, and also some of the worst. also too many bosses. They've streamlined a bit on the management end and I still have technically about 6 different bosses. And all of those aren't necessarily pulling in the same direction.

Liked the Enid episode. Heath was the one sore spot for me. He just represents to me those "non-character" characters. First he's all bleeding heart, the he's cut-throat, then he doesn't know what he is. He's all "we never leave anybody behind" and then he leaves Tara behind. Like - the character isn't a character, it's just - a setpiece that the writers put where they need it and it does whatever they want it to do. But he's not really a character with a set morality and real-seeming character traits. Bits of the story were a little basic and glossed over. But it was alright. A nice little episode. Oceanside was a nice addition. Obviously things don't pan out exactly as they do in the comics on the show, so it'll be interesting to see where the Oceanside story goes. I actually love the pace of this season so far. It feels more like the first episode of the show with Rick waking up in the hospital and his backstory etc. I like these mini-movie episodes more than the soap opera episodes. I like when they take their time with the characters.

I just went to their youtube page to find a clip from the last Billy On the Street. and yeah, they seem to have a lot of comedy projects going. but - as far as Billy goes, it's - kind of easy to pass by I think because on the surface it's very sort of superficially "reality-tv"ish kinda. what I like about it is the character and also the way he works blatant humor with subtlety. It's an oddly nuanced schtick that I find very appealing. And also refreshing in the alchemy of it.
-
yes. wait. what is that?
-
this is actually not the best part of this segment, they cut the last minute or so out of it for some reason.
-
TruTV has traditionally been a reality/exploitation network basically. they have had some inexplicable jags into comedy though, maybe they're also looking to tap into Adult Swim's audience. I think Billy On the Street is also TruTV. Dunno if they got any other comedies. I really love those two though (Glaser Loves Gear and Billy o/t Street)

I've only seen the first episode so far but that was really really funny.

Anne Rice Vampires getting TV show
Admin replied to fuggnificent's topic in Arts, Literature & Music
isn't there a new book coming out? I read a bunch of them but lost track. I think there's been more since I got distracted and stopped reading them. I should go find em. and then read the old ones again. -

hey so finally got around to misaka, who's been bugging me a lot for an expanded role. took me awhile to set it up because it has a bit to do with a phase we're not quite at yet with the board. but basically misaka will be helping us keep track of board info (like with the rank thread) and eventually posting a daily thing in the announcements folder that tells what all happened on the board that day. eventually we'll be using those daily posts as a central linkpoint to advertise board more. but we're not there yet. we have a bit more to do before we toss the doors open to attempt to bring in more people. that's not to say you shouldn't continue to feel free to invite friends and comrades if you want. But I'm not going to start attempting to get the word out on a larger scale than word of mouth til we're more ready for that.

I think we're pretty close to a server upgrade.
