Yup, and I think you're right probably (since I'm dub anime only) more jaded too. He was when they reached the sea as well if you recall since he'd seen it in Grisha's memories and because he saw how the rest of the world hates Eldians too so there was no freedom just from finally reaching beyond the walls.

As shown in Ymir's big reveal flashack. Ymir got buried under the ground when she didn't move for years. Her mindless Titan form woke up from them camping nearby and she attacked in order to try and eat one of them like all mindless Titans. Marcel pushed Reiner out of the way and got eaten. Which turned Ymir into a shifter (since Marcel had the Jaws Titan) giving her her humanity back.

Yeah, personally I never read the manga so I strongly preferred WIT's anime designs even after seeing it.

I think it's more in between since it still have some of the anime styling and I don't think it looks ugly and at times looks close to the past seasons. But at the same time having loved the look of the past seasons I would have liked to see these older versions get designed by the character designer of S1-3 since they did such a great job on the past seasons and they'd obviously be tweaked compared to these. We'd been watching the anime not the manga for these three seasons so just being closer to the manga is not "better" by default.
