Pilaf and Mai were only added to give Trunks a female love intrest his lack of one caused him to gain a fanbase of fujoshis who thought he was Gay so they gave him a girlfriend to shoot down that fanbase

from what I understand Vegeta gets several awesome moments in the but he gets taken down a peg just as much as in this arc

Toei currently developed a soft spot for Yamcha, they've even given him a spin-off they've also developed one for Vegeta....now...but for the first 3 or so arcs of this show they rather virulently hated him, after the arc they start making him awesome again
