Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.  My Mom actually turned me on to it after I moved her in with me.  Yes, they trace back the ancestry of "famous" people and I thought, "Sure, a bunch of privileged jerks get their ancestry done for free, whoopie!".  But it's been pretty powerful.  We just watched this episode (the link is just the teaser), and I'll admit I was tearing up.

Sterling K. Brown, Jon Batiste and Sasheer Zamata learn about the unexpected places their ancestors called home.

I like it too, mostly because Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has a compassionate way of presenting it.

Yeah, he always seems to know what to say to soften the blow when the news isn't exactly good.

Yeah.  He paces it so that what might seem like bad news has a relatively happy ending in context.  It serves to give a sobering picture of the times without burdening the individual with it.
