The wikia doesn't say if it is based on anything from the manga or reference books or anything, but it had this under trivia. When Kakashi confronted Orochimaru during the third round preliminary of the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru said that Kakashi did not have the Sharingan last time they met, but this episode contradicts that. The only way to know for sure would have been to have read the manga and be aware of any supplemental materials. If I try to look any further I'll probably run into spoilers.
