[classic swim]
^ This in-game photo is one of the oldest in my gallery. Had to have been taken dead on the time of release, just minutes within me playing for the very first time. I remember taking Big Smoke’s car for my own and going everywhere around Los Santos before even having a grasp of the other sides of the map. When the game warned me not to leave town early, I tried swimming away at night and cops shot me dead in the water. I’ve 100%’d more than once (pain in the ass), and even had a save just for replaying all the starter missions. Story was that entertaining from the start that I actually wanted to keep the first chapter of it close by. Never had to do that for any other game. [classic swim]
Prologue: Quote Chapter One: Carl Johnson escaped the city, his past, and a life that was spiraling out of control. He abandoned Los Santos for Liberty City when his brother Brian met an early end. Unfortunately, gang violence also claimed his mother’s life, forcing CJ’s return to the city to attend the funeral... En Route from the Los Santos International Airport, CJ’s welcomed by a couple of old acquaintances from his gangbanging past—corrupt officers, Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski. The C.R.A.S.H. officers drop CJ off at the heart of Rolling Heights Ballas country. They draw CJ back in the game by linking him to a weapon used in a fresh cop killing. You are Carl Johnson, you are unarmed, and have just been dropped off in the middle of your rival gang’s territory.
[classic swim]
That BMX bike? Might not seem like a big deal right now. But for you? It’s the one tool leading you to the journey of a lifetime. Grove Street. Home. No matter how long it’s been. No matter how long you’re away. You can always claim this to be home. And over there! On the red marker... the house you were brought up in! You walk inside. Stifling through the memories. Beverly Johnson. Your mother. The faint sanity of your upbringing. Gone. But... what’s this? Big Smoke mistakes you for some basehead burglar. Once he stops to recognize, Smoke embraces you as his old pal and lost brother in arms. Not before offering you some quotes from the book, Smoke takes you to your mom’s funeral; Sweet and Kendl will be waiting. At first, the reunion’s not so great. Your older brother Sweet’s still crotchety since you went away. Baby sister Kendl’s no baby no more. She’s off making her own decisions. No matter. In the moment... The pivotal Grove Street Families crew is united once more! Takes awhile for you to get adjusted and acknowledge that the Ballas & Vagos have consumed much of LS. Nothing an OG like yourself can’t handle. Not long after checking in with your boy Ryder, you’ll find yourself... Cruising the spot... Claiming royalties... Tagging up turf... Even helping get the set back where it was. “FUCK THEM GROVE STREET FOOLS!” Ballas homie outcries.
