Rick is the only thing keeping Adult Swim afloat.

I would argue Smiling Friends is as well. I mean, it is for me right now. Who knows if that translates to ratings and cash flow.

They still haven't premiered a new comedy show other than Royal Crackers since the WBD (which does flow better, IMO) merger, and that show has now aired two seasons! I don't know how long they're going to keep this up, but they need an infusion of fresh shows.

  2. Smiling Friends S2E3 (live)

Didn't gel with me as much as the previous two of this season did (though this might've had to do with my overall mood, not that it was bad), but this show is still delightful. I have to imagine what Alan went through was even more awesome than Pim and Charlie's unseen adventure; my younger self didn't like that trope.

Oh, wait, I just realized I could've put these in the other thread. Gotta try harder next time.

  3. So, a few things:

    • Desperate? If anything I think this is the opposite. Zaslav and friends must think the block is doing well enough to give them a little something extra. Although I have been wondering if they actually wanted to air Sailor Moon on Toonami proper, only for some cunning executive to come in and say "Actually, how about we try this?" So if they were desperate, they would've shoved these shows on the main block.
    • Love the fact that they're using the 2012-era packaging for this. Bit of a tangent, but it's funny how I've never really gotten why they feel the need to change the packaging every year, but this current package has been used for two years now (since the merger, in fact, which probably explains it) and now I'm in the mood for a change. Would be nice if they could go back to prior graphics sets on the main block.
    • DeMarco leaving Twitter is no big loss to me. I could do without all the negative posting about politics that shows up on my feed.
    • My overall thoughts on this block: hell yeah. I'm at least tuning in for Sailor Moon.

  4. Touhou Fantasy Kaleidoscope: The Memories of Phantasm
Episodes 14 and 15: "The Youkai Mountain Battle Incident" [parts one and two] a.k.a. "The Battle of Youkai Mountain", heh

    Spoiler

Damnit, another long gap. Makes the groove I was getting into with these reviews late last year all the more surprising. We're gonna roll right into things this time, not that I had anything planned.

And so we arrive at the arc adapting the tenth Touhou game, Mountain of Faith, a game that I not only bought but have actually beaten... albeit on Easy, w/ the glitched version of Marisa, and with continues. Tsk tsk. And there's not much filler here, as the action immediately starts with Sanae barging into Reimu's shrine and telling her to give up her gig as the primary miko of Gensokyo. At least she's nice enough not to try and beat her right away, although she does use a Spell Card as a warning shot. She gives Reimu three days to put up or shut up, but Reimu decides to get this done right here and now, and flies off to the newly-rechristened Youkai Mountain w/ Moriya Shrine on top. Cue the usual "OP, then Reimu defeats the bosses of the first two stages with no effort". Poor Aki sisters, and Hina goes down without a fight either, in spite of them all being gods.

The tengu take notice of Reimu's arrival at the mountain, at which point Aya decides to cook up a plan. Marisa is chilling inside her home in the hollowed-out mountain, and she actually doesn't have ill motives this time: she's on a sightseeing tour in exchange for a scoop for Bunbunmaru. But she can't stay on her best behavior for long, as Aya soon leaves to take on Reimu, leaving an open door she can't help but use to escape. Marisa then gets tangled up with Nitori, the kappa who has long been sociable with humans. They do some science together, and it's really cute... until their rocket's exhaust causes a tidal wave that nearly drowns Marisa. She doesn't want to be part of the kappa's "human experiments", so she runs off. This is quite a change of scenery compared to the rest of the show, which is even more stark when considering the cold reality that Memories of Phantasm never made a profit in its 12 years in production. Seemingly none of the Touhou fanime have, in fact. And you know what? It looks good to me, though it is lacking polish that distinguished this show's first few episodes.

Another new locale is Yukari's gap dimension, which she uses to spy on Reimu as she makes her way up the mountain. And she gets a front-row seat to her "battle" with Aya, which is unceremoniously thrown because Reimu is no match for her, and she knows it. Besides, either the members of Moriya Shrine or the tengu high brass were gonna get her for something eventually. A Fantasy Seal makes quick work of the fuckin' bird that Reimu hates, and then it's off to the summit where both Kanako and Sanae are waiting. A 2-on-1 battle? That's not fair for Reimu, but she still engages in battle. And Yukari happily looks on, feeling satisfied that her plan to destroy Reimu is finally taking shape. Wait, wasn't the purpose of moving Moriya Shrine to Gensokyo to gain more faith? Not in this show. It's an interesting twist, one that seems just a little out of character for Yukari, though at least one thing we all know her for is being a professional troll. Oh, and the true native god of Moriya Shrine is camping out in the basement, getting drunk, and eagerly waiting to make her move.

The end is within sight, folks. And with two more episodes in the books that were engaging and action-packed, it makes me with that wasn't the case. Here's to Memories of Phantasm, a show that is often mocked in memes as having child porn.

    Random thoughts:

    • Meme: From the recent installment of Touhoufest:

I had another meme that I wanted to post that was meant to go up in the last post (I forgor), but now I've decided it's not up to my standards. Doesn't hurt that it's not abusable... although technically this one isn't either, which means I haven't really been posting actual memes in here. Oh well. Next time I do a review series with a feature like this, I'll have to try harder.

    • Another thing that distinguishes this arc from previous ones is the (relatively) smaller cast. No deluge of cameos in the intro, only a tired Suika. But how'd she get on the roof?
    • I enjoy the austere background of Aya's leaf storm Spell card during her confrontation with Reimu, although for all I know this was a practical move to save budget.
    • We're back again to the original OP for this arc, which is my second-favorite in the show. My personal power rankings are: PoFV (6/7) > MoF (1, 8, 14-?) > IN (9-13) > EoSD (2-5). Next time around, I'll start to really delve into the background music of this series, which I think is long overdue. I probably could've done it here, but I want to finally get the post in.
    • The ED drawings for this arc are very cute. The first one is about Reimu, Marisa and the Aki sisters, while the second is about Sanae and shows her daily life. Sadly, I can't find the artist responsible for them. Do any of you know who "パン山ホにきい" is?
    • This arc's eyecatch animation is a chibi Sanae praying. Once we get to the end, I'll upload a montage of all of them, since I have the power to do so.
    • Subtitle update: mild jank. They're a bit long-winded, but not as much as Episode 11's subs. I imagine the MoP experience is what people watching some unlicensed shows this season (but hopefully not Shiny Colors) are going through. Oh, and the preview for Ep. 15 isn't subbed.
    • By the way, happy Koishi Day.
    • Oh shit, I also forgor the ratings. TV-PGV for #14, and TV-14 for #15.

[ten thousand creatures, none the same]

  5. So anyway, here's what I meant to type up earlier:

Man, Ninja Kamui feels like a show that could've been perfectly alright if it didn't shoot itself in the foot with the heavy CG use. You set up your final boss fight to be two superninja against a ninja wizard with Force powers, and then the fight ends up being three pallete swaps of the same CGI model smacking each other kinda slowly with Advent Children swords and the only ninjutsu used are dream sequences.

At least Mike got a satisfying finale on the side. Emma dying how she did still feels like a mistake, but at least we get to see Mike kick Joseph's ass. Still can't believe Demarco managed to survive the entire show.

I personally think the Gessoku Gear fights were a better idea in theory than execution. The show needed better physics to really make them feel weighty. I also feel that their introduction is a little backhanded, more of a way to keep the hot-blooded ninja action going while not blowing out the budget. At least Yamaji becoming the Lord of Lightning and gatekeep, gaslight, and ninjabossing Joe into thinking he let his wife and kid die were cool and fucked up, respectively.

Sadly, while I figured this show was a slam dunk to to be Toonami's best original (Space Dandy doesn't count) at some point, now I'm not sure I can say that. I do like it more than Shenmue, but if pressed I'll admit that show is probably objectively better. Too bad about the whole "no ending, plus you can't legally watch the dub" thing.

  6. I'll give Warners this much: if this had happened a year ago, they probably would've cancelled and written off the show without saying a word. It'll be interesting to see if this will be their new strategy for shows that would otherwise be deleted forever. I mean, I imagine if the show isn't popular enough, they'll just write it off,  but they also haven't written off anything recently, so...

    You know what???

Considering Netflix is basically the death of animation....

    This show ain't coming back.

Get the best rips of it as possible because this shit's getting written off.

Also, y'all should start getting good rips of Ninja Kamui as well because I have a strange feeling it's gonna get written off too if the marathon's anything to go by.

Housing Complex C hasn't been written off, and I don't think anyone would shed a tear if they did. You're being too pessimistic.

Wait, I have to tape DBZ Kai tonight! They're almost past the marathon without me realizing. Thanks for the unintentional heads-up.

Actually, turns out I was already taping it... only now my old recordings have been deleted. Thanks, mom. So were my Zom 100 recordings, though I can catch up on those via VOD. Weirdly, the last two LycoReco episodes are still there.

Oh wow, you started that sooner than I thought. I should catch up before you're the one posting ratings in our thread! :LithiumSmileyLaugh:

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead 4
A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics 4

This has actually been a long time coming: I bought the DVDs in late 2018, but it took me until now to watch them, which was on a whim. But it also doesn't hurt that I don't have to rate the show myself given you're doing it in the thread.

I was curious to see how you'd react to this. I think it'd be weird to take over rating the show from someone else, so how about this: you can keep doing the descriptions at your own pace even after I pass you. If nothing else, we can at least compare our ratings afterward; I assume mine will be different, and maybe not as good. :LithiumSmileyS:

Cable television is mostly  reruns these days. A lot of channels are just playing old movies and tv shows     That isn’t worth paying so much for

Maybe it would be different if the networks were showing new movies, but those seem to go straight to streaming with no other option. Look at the Paramount Network, for instance: they haven't added anything new in years, feels like. Just the umpteeth reruns of Forrest Gump, Shooter, and Adam Sandler comedies to go with a bunch of Bar Rescue reruns. Interestingly, networks aimed at younger viewers have been better about this, but still rely on a lot of old favorites. I've seen the original Jumanji playing on the living room TV a couple times this week.

Personally, I don't pay for cable, but at this point I use it mostly for sports and whatever [as] is showing. Lately my family has been engrossed in the show 9-1-1, so reruns of that on USA and WEtv are a constant feature on the 'ol idiot box.

Woah, that was a hype premiere. First few minutes went too fast for me, but I loved the rest. How many timelines to I have to jump to get to the universe where this aired on Toonami?

I also love the idea of having Internet stations in public spaces you can plug your phone into. Intact moon be damned, they should add that to our world.

Good catch with Superman, another two part start would help them buy a bit more time for MHA.

Can’t say I agree with AoT for Memorial Day. I think they (and the audience) has put AoT behind them. While Superman really could do with a refresher course before the new season starts.

I think IGPX will come back this year, but a little differently. With the newfound decay in expectations, I have returned to my earlier suspicion that DBZ will be the show replacing Naruto as the eternal 2a show. When that happens, IGPX will tag in and grab 2:30.

Rick anime will be tricky. If they lead with it like you theorize, Toonami ratings are going straight down across the board. If they care about anything they acquired, I doubt they will want that. So Rick has to go somewhere else. Either a 3am run or some other time on Saturday that isn’t officially Toonami but is far enough away to not do too much damage.

They didn’t seem too confident on it making 2024. And I don’t believe any AS original that didn’t have CR involved met its originally stated deadline. Plus it’s to their benefit to take a little extra time purely to give 2025 at least one piece of content to aspire to. Until we hear otherwise, Lazarus is the last original on deck.

If we go get a MAWS marathon, I guess I'll have to tape it and use it as my own crash course. I didn't bother doing so with the premiere run, mostly because I taped the entire run of Unicorn only to not watch it after hearing people say it's mid.

Do we think there's any chance Boruto could return after Shippuden ends? I bet Viz could give them a sweetheart deal on it if they really wanted to. Or they could rely on Kai, because at this point the numbers are low enough back there that I doubt whatever they'd air would make a difference.

I could see Rickanime airing pre-Toonami on Saturdays, maybe at 11:30 (just like Black Dynamite S2 back in the day) or earlier. Remember when they aired a one-off new episode of Smiling Friends on a Saturday at 11:00? Wonder if that was intended as a test for things to come...
