But, literally, it's a musical instrument that resembles a gourd and has many ripples on the surface. You play it by striking or brushing it with a thin stick. Yeah... The stuff I could learn at local concert performances. I had heard guiros a few times before on old Harry Belafonte recordings, but never paid that much attention until I saw somebody live, playing it. Later, I asked the conductor about it.
