Misaka Posted January 21, 2017 Author Share Posted January 21, 2017 As the UEMB turns... 1/21 you may or may not have noticed that I haven't had time to post news and updates, that's because I've been busy with other stuff, and also because of issues with users and volunteers careening out of control. Been thinking about all of it and here is the result of that stuff: 1. If you have any issues with staff, let me know and I will look into it. 2. If we have issues with you, we need to be able to talk to you. So be open to that. 3. we are having some issues with spambots. Luckily, none have actually made it past registration. But we're coming up with ideas to limit access to the board for such accounts. haven't quite hit on the perfect solution yet. But we'll be playing around with some stuff, including "invisible ranks" that are assigned that allow access to the board. This is by no means fully functional or anything, but if you notice extra weird little ranks on your profile, don't delete those. They may be "access/pass" type ranks. Not even sure we'll end up needing to do anything with them, and I haven't finished assigning them. But that's what they are if you happen to notice an extra rank on your profile (I think the only test one right now is "media bastard") don't worry about it, it's a test thing. 4. Finally, I'll be updating the mod standards slightly again. And will update the moderation thread in here soon. The basic idea is: we're sticking to spoiler tags/content warnings. But, if a user isn't accepting the tag, and re-edits the post, we'll just delete the post. Dumpster Fires has not been deleted, it's just off board for the moment, I may still bring it back. Misaka Posted March 7, 2017 Author Share Posted March 7, 2017 March 02, 2017, 09:47:23 PM today scaled back the board as far as how much of it is visible to guests just to see if it had any effect on the spambot situation. so don't be alarmed if you can't read quite as much of the board as you once could when not logged on. if it doesn't have any particular effect, I'll probably switch stuff back on for guests again. gonna leave it like this for a few weeks at least to get a good read on if it has any effect. I was pretty thorough, but there's still a lot of crap to click/check/consolidate etc (permissions are in like 80 different places for the same stuff, it's crazy). basically new users should be able to access and post in the Introductions area and Free For All boards no matter what. Guests (people not logged in) should be able to access and post on the Password Recovery board no matter what. All users have a set of invisible ranks for each section of the board. New users have to be assigned those. so as soon as we get that, they should be good to go for posting everywhere. if you find that your buttons have disappeared to post/reply to threads, or post new threads, or you can't access parts of the board you'd like to, let me know and I should be able to fix it in a minute or so of reading/seeing the PM. If the board crashes, keep the backup link handy so you can go and complain about the board crashing and stuff and wait with others in the rain til it comes back up. I stuck it in the main forum banner block because that was the easiest way for me to do it. "AwesomeJamInk" is Zintar's paypal biz acct, he is the one handling the donation/money part. the plan is whatever gifts to the donate button will go to server expenses, if we have more after that, it'll sit in the account until we need it for something site related, such as software purchases/upgrades and things of that nature.
