Codename: Jackass
Homme and the boys dropped a single, The Way You Used to Do on Wednesday. In a statement, Homme said the most important aspect of Villains was "redefining our sound, asking and answering the question, 'What do we sound like now?' If you can't make a great first record, you should just stop – but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn't evolve, you become a parody of that original sound." Homme also noted the album's title isn't a political statement, but rather "a word that looks fantastic" and "a comment on the three versions of every scenario: Yours, mine and what actually happened. Everyone needs someone or something to rail against – their villain – same as it ever was. You can't control that. The only thing you can really control is when you let go." Codename: Jackass
Solid album. Officially a grower. Not as good as Like Clockwork but a nice change of pace. I only really dislike one song. A couple more took repeated listens but I'm digging them. Not really a fan of Ronson's production overall, but the bass is really prominent I the mix and Shuman really shines. Drums are too subdued, kind of flat otherwise. Some of the lyrics are a little corny but that's okay. My biggest worry is that Homme might be running out of ideas musically, the album lacks the vitality of his best work, but most of the songs groove and rock. 7.5/10 Best songs: Feet Don't Fail Me, Domesticated Animals, The Evil Has Landed Worst song: Hideaway
