It's not like Chris Rock has hosted the Oscars twice and roasted celebrities during his times as host or anything . . .

Yes, but those times he was the host.  I can't recall the last time I saw the award presenter make a joke about someone who wasn't a nominee for that award.  Hosting is a different thing entirely.

Well I dunno about that. You were just saying the Academy show is not a comedy show, yet they regularly have comedians host the event. Maybe Chris was out of line for presenting an award, but the Academy was definitely aware of this possibility. In the end, they win regardless, as this is giving them the most publicity they've had in a long time.

It isn't.  It's a show hosted by (almost exclusively) comedians, and that obscures the fact the rules are different for a host than a comedian doing his set.  Every joke has to be approved, which the GI Jane one was not ( it was ad libbed).  The Academy knows that comedians will go off script, but that doesn't mean they give them cover to do so.

Anyawy, my point isn't to say Will had any right to confront Chris (let alone slap him); it's just to say Chris shouldn't be protected from offense at ill conceived jokes.

Heres the last thing ill say about it as someone who has been doing stand up for four years. First of all this isnt a race issue. Will wasnt supposed to "play nice for the white folks" he was supposed to conduct himself like a professional. If he felt some type of way he could have pressed chris after. There are obvious double standards here. Ive heard comics (professional and local) rip on dudes for having no hair and nobody bats an eye. But one millionaire actress princess gets the same treatment and you really think the comic deserves to be physically attacked? Please never come to a comedy show. Chris Rock didnt do anything but there are plenty of comics who will. This is why im trying to close this "we can attack comics that offend us now" door some people seem bent on opening because the fresh prince did it and mostly got away with it. It wont end well for anyone. At best youll just get kicked out. At worst youll get your shit rocked and go to fucking jail. Seriously lets be adults here. Walking up to someone in the middle of the show and doing a bunch of yelling after you land a weak ass smack in a setting where that type of shit isnt expected doesnt make you a man. Walking up on the dude man to man and confronting him about it and going from there does but its all good. Hes rich so he can assault people and its cool i guess lol idk.

I think youd be singing a completely different tune if it was your man that got smacked. Secondly lets not pretend that baldness is a fucking disability. Shes not in a wheelchair or handicapped in anyway. She cant grow her hair. Thats very sad but again dudes get that rip all the time and nobody gets smacked for it

Bottom line if you think running up on comics and popping them because you didnt like something they said is ok i really hope you dont pop the wrong one lol

Your white passing ass does not get to dictate what classifies as a race fucking issue involving black folks. Chris Rock chose to insult a black woman's appearance on a night specifically meant to superficially gas us up. That was coon behavior on top of other shit that Buddy already posted about. What you need to understand is that like a lot of folks in the gay and trans communities, black women are just as fucking tired of the endless jokes used to dehumanize us. Watching one of the few black women with a seat in that room get mocked in front of millions instead of just being allowed to be beautiful while other women got that grace was painful. It was a reminder that no matter what the situation is, we'll be kicked down. It doesn't matter if the Crown Act passing the House made the news, it doesn't matter if Will Packer was in charge of the ceremony that night, y'all still managed to humiliate a black woman on national television.

Then after finding out Jada has alopecia, was an apology issued to her from the Academy or Rock? Nope. Crickets. And while you're talking out the side of your neck to a black woman about how I should feel about this, you're also talking to someone who is disabled so don't put fucking words into my mouth. Acting all big and bad talking about how people will get hurt if they attack comics. None of these hit dogs would be hollering so much if they could actually fight. And what's with all these imaginary scenarios people defending Rock come up with? If that was my man, I'd slap my damn self for being with a bitch ass motherfucker like that.

Has no one watched G.I. Jane?

The joke was about Jada starring in a sequel to a movie about a beautiful woman who surpassed the limits imposed on her by...(evil theme music)....MEN

That joke was not only complementary, it was feminist @DragonSinger.

It's like if someone called you kunta kinte and you're all like "it's a compliment because he was a hero to his people".  No, he was a slave...that's the joke.

Bro, it was a bald joke, recontextualizing it as anything other than a bald joke is pretty foolish. It would’ve been a good joke, if GI Jane was in any way relevant.

It was also used to denigrate girls/women for doing anything not considered to be traditionally feminine and had some homophobic usage too. It was like a catchall insult that took the place of Sinead O' Connor cracks. God this conversation is making me feel old.

It’s tragic that Sinead only recently came up because she lost her son way too young.

The most insulting thing to me is that Rock’s brother is the only one addressing the fact he didn’t know she had Alopecia and he’s not even offering an apology.  Like I said earlier, JPS is treated like a villain and that somehow gives people a pass at insulting her.  I don’t have to condone what Will did to see how this fits into a larger pattern of making JPS a monster by those on the outside.  Even the joke Regina in the opening portrays her in a way that makes her out to be a self entitled slut who deserves to be a punching bag.

Also, the comics feeling sorry for themselves leaves a bad taste.  No one gives a shit if Amy Schumer is traumatized.

With Chris’ history of doing just that, I wouldn’t be surprised that he was aiming for this dog as well. Never seen Good Hair, but I’ve heard that movie being levied against him.

Adultery is easily and frequently villainized, and while it’s definitely bad, no one wants to think about the deeper questions about why adultery happens in a relationship.

Well, it's more than that even though you're absolutely correct about women (especially those of color) being villianized for it disproportionately.  JPS is often seen as an imposter (also in large part because of her skin color), and it isn't helped that her relative lack of personality makes her seem cold.  On top of that, her whole connection with Tupac Shakur rubs a lot of people the wrong way, giving them the perception that she's a social climbing hack.  It's not all her fault, but she also doesn't do much to make herself likable.  People like her are easy to target and it's understandable that Will might have felt some shame that he hadn't done more to protect her from Rock's crass joke.  It's just unfortunate that his inappropriate response only made things worse by giving a shitty comedian cover for a clearly insulting joke.

So i stand behind everything I said. If you run up on a comic and smack them, some of them are going to fire back. Simple 🤷‍♂️

You're not the first person to call me white. Lol it's pretty funny to me cause I swear I remember being called a spic, wetback, chink, gook and various other shit by both white and black kids growing up. That's cool tho make sure to go back and remind the racist hicks that jumped me and took all my money when I was in fifth grade that I'm white. Lol I'm sure they'll be quick to apologize for their mistake. Make sure to tell the kids that used to beat my ass every day and call me a stupid Mexican that I'm white as well. I mean we should clear up the misunderstanding asap lol. I'm sure they never meant to attack a white kid. Make sure to let my dad know that he's a white man as well. I'm sure he'll be thrilled.

Honestly, I'm sorry if it seemed like I was calling you out on your name or any shit like that. It wasn't my intention. You're right, I can't speak on black problems. I'm not black. But I'm also not fucking white. I got scars to prove it. It's cool tho. You win here cause more people fuck with you on this little board than me. Congrats. Best of luck to you.

Side note. Don't try that smacking a comic shit in Detroit. Most of them carry lol.

The highlighted in red part is literally what white passing means. It doesn't mean that everyone is going to think you're white or that you've never encountered racism. And if you had used any of your past to learn how to step in other folks' shoes enough to stay in your lane, then we wouldn't even be having this back and forth. This incident had backstory that you and other comics have made about themselves without thinking about the context. If your comedy is aimed at minorities who receive the worst treatment from society and those folks are fed up, then it is what it is. Violence can come with consequences no matter what city you're in. You can have the pleasure of slapping a little bitch, end up with your arm broken in the opposite direction, shot, etc. Actually being funny instead of just punching down probably lessens the chances of someone willing to risk it, but it's easier to be lazy and stir up hate.

Edited to add: the popularity contest on who determines a winner in this is in your head.

This will be my last response to this because we're obviously never going to see eye to eye although I do agree with you that punching down is generally hack. To reiterate, I do not think his joke was good, but I defend his right to make it within the context of him being a hired performer.

Also lol you know damn well it ain't in my head. People don't hate me here but if you think for one second they aren't automatically going to take you're side because they rock with you more, you're choosing to ignore the dynamic this weird ass message board is built on.

Have a good day. I mean that sincerely

That's not true bro.  You don't post here all that much, so maybe you don't have a feel for the dynamics, but your opinion isn't dismissed.  I don't happen to agree with your stance on Chris Rock (who had never apologized for good joke, btw) but I definitely take your perspective as a comedian as better insight into Chris than someone who isn't a comedian.

Not sure how since there are levels to this shit and black women are riding the lowest rung, so when a black woman finds issue with that was done or said to another black woman, and it being defended by what a large amount of legal documents would consider a white male, just adds to the disrespect and dismissive nature.

The term has an ugly connotation to someone who has previously mentioned that he was subject to at least some bigotry because of his race, and it was a needless personal qualifier to an otherwise perfectly articulated point.  As wrong as his argument is, it’s one that other comics, including WOC, have also made in defense of a comic who is also a POC.

Not sure how? You don't see how completely disregarding someone's heritage (which they take a great deal of pride in) and calling them white is wrong? It's no different than when a black person doesn't use slang and ignorant mfs say that person is "acting white". I can't with yall 🤣

I get there are certainly social rungs to this, but two wrongs don't make a right. You can agree with her stance on Rock's joke without completely disregarding me as a minority. How many native Americans do you see walking around? Not many. We were mostly wiped out and guess who did it 😲

Well it kind of started because you were dismissive of the racial ramifications of Rock’s joke.  It’s never just a joke when you’re dealing with race specific health conditions, and It’s all the worse because it’s reducing JPS’s severe anxiety about the condition to a punchline.  Some jokes do cut worse than others and there are boundaries to what a comedian can joke about.  Like you said, two wrongs don’t make a right, but you were racially insensitive in making that argument in the first place.

First of all "alopecia" really just means hair loss, and obviously, that refers to anyone who experiences it.  For most people, it can be attributed to another cause (severe obesity, chemotherapy, genetic traits), but it appears to be more common in black women who don't otherwise have the usual physiological factors.  The causes of it are not fully known yet, but it's a well known fact in the African American community that women run a heightened risk of losing their hair for no discernible reason.
