96% of deep fake are porn

Recommended Posts

Not surprising huh

https://www.wired.com/story/most-deepfakes-porn-multiplying-fast/

Startup Deeptrace took a kind of deepfake census during June and July to inform its work on detection tools it hopes to sell to news organizations and online platforms. It found almost 15,000 videos openly presented as deepfakes—nearly twice as many as seven months earlier. Some 96 percent of the deepfakes circulating in the wild were pornographic, Deeptrace says.

The count is unlikely to be exhaustive, but the findings are a reminder that despite speculation about deepfakes destabilizing elections, the technology is mostly being used very differently, including as a tool for harassment. One worrying trend: Deeptrace says the tools needed to create deepfakes are becoming more sophisticated and more widely available.

I mean there is way more porn than elections. Deep faking elections would only be extremely useful a few months out of every couple of years depending on what elections you are referring to.

Porn is pretty much 24/7 and with the ability to make a very convincing copy of any celebrity (and possible high school crushes of professional editing nerds) it only makes sense.

It’s too easy at this point to spot a deepfake to be properly used for doctoring footage of a politician. Not only this, but in a post-truth media landscape, fake footage of a politician or president doing something skeevy wouldn’t phase people as much of it’s just one more tool that can be used to pander to your target audience. If Photoshop never caused people to make convincing exposé material, Deepfakes were going to have a difficult time determining the fate of a politician’s career.

For pornography, however, it’s a boon that allows viewers to suspend their disbelief by letting their imagination run wild with the obviously faked porn. If I can see my favorite K-Pop stars in Deepfaked porn that’s convincing enough to enjoy fapping to, why would I demand for any other use for Deepfakes than more fake celebrity porn?

California just adopted a digital privacy bill into law. I won't say I know all the details off the top of my head, but it's a landmark action in catching up to technology.
