Their "Demarco hates Toonami" edit for this week was fire.

Burning Down The Better Cartoon Show.jpg

This is oddly appropriate given JoJo: DiU's tailspin on Toonami, which has it tumbling down to the abyss of 3 AM!

By now, I'm sure you've seen the new schedule, which has it being death-slotted there beginning April 13th:

Image

The question is: will we still get to know its ratings breakdown on ShowBuzzDaily whenever it makes the Top 50? Well, for now, here's this week's SBD report:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-3-30-2019.html

Final-Cable-2019-Mar-30.SAT_.png

Dragon Ball Super still managed a (sorta) lucky 777K, and then everything went downhill from there, but the SAO hour held pretty strong in the 400Ks.

Next week, Toonami goes up against the Final Four, and it probably won't be pretty. If only it could get a spot or two in that last hour of gameplay; it begins around the same time the 2nd game wraps up. But with the Final Four on CBS instead of TBS, that probably isn't even remotely practical.

SPECIAL REPORT: Gemusetto Macchu Picchu seems to have done better than Toonami averages in every category and every timeslot, but I guess we won't know for sure until full 1 AM and 2 AM hour numbers are out, at least not with 18-49.

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-sunday-cable-originals-network-finals-3-31-2019.html

TIMELY EDIT, for those who see this post in the future and are confused: JoJo: DiU WAS in fact saved from the "abyss" of 3 AM; the true schedule from 4/13/19 onward can be found in the video below:

Didn't watch? Here's the short version: MHA up to 11:30; TPN premieres at 12 AM. JoJo and Black Clover move up to 1 & 1:30 respectively. Boruto falls all the way to 2 AM, followed by Shippuden at 2:30, and HxH drops to 3 AM. DBS and SAO stay put.

Not too shabby! We clearly see why Black Clover and Shippuden are getting promoted, and Boruto and JoJo demoted, but more head-scratching is why MHA is getting demoted and SAO promoted! If anything, these ratings prove the order should be Super, MHA, PN, SAO3, BC.

Hmmm, now that's interesting. Programming Insider reports a different number for DBZ Kai, plus makes it clear that Super won the night:

All indications seem to lead to SAO potentially holding DBS better than Boruto, but why not MHA?? Retention-wise, that show would have been a dynamo!

With the Final Four on CBS, Live PD wins cable, DBS comes in 2nd, and Boruto actually cracks the TOP 3 before being banished to 2 AM!

Another oddity is that the bloodier, more controversial half of the SAO hour actually managed to edge out the tamer half, though not in total viewers. And pretty good numbers overall:

Final-Cable-2019-Apr-06.SAT_.png

All 5 shows made the Top 25 (Top 23 in fact), so I'd say that's a win for Toonami (as well as for Virginia and Texas Tech)!

DB Super did even better than last week, but again everything after that flatlines in the usual level. With the Final Four happening as well as Live PD I was assuming much worse than this. And it looks like that SAO Episode That Shall Not Be Named didn't really affect the retention after it.

I'd say it was a blessing in disguise as a curse, if that even makes any sense!

And I'll leave it up to you whether I'm talking about the NBA Finals or Sexual Assault Online...

[a little of both]

DBS kicked FG's ass by a pretty wide margin! Which is good, because at some point American Dad will probably have to take its place, as it's the only FOX show that will be going to TBS/AS in the split. Perhaps they can get back KOTH though; Comedy Central ain't doing jack with it these days...

Noticed something fun.

AS On Demand has JoJo Part 3 random episodes until May 9.  I think after that it’s gonna show up on Netflix.  And given how well Parts I and II did for them, it will be fun to see if it gets a new, bigger audience outside of Toonami.

Promising start for Promised Neverland! All 4 shows from 11P-1A over 500K for the 3rd time this year!!

The real victory is in the 18-34s, as the Midnight Hour hasn't been over 0.3 in quite a while! But the combo of TPN and AOT pulled it off after a slightly weaker start by DBS! Granted, we haven't known the 18-34s for 12 AM in quite a while, either...

Welp, so much for the promise of Promised Neverland, as it gets edged out by SAO and JoJo on what arguably is a "bad" night in this day and age:

Final-Cable-2019-Apr-20.SAT_.png

Well, at least all 5 shows that were eligible made the Top 50, but Boruto's 18-34 number was just plain awful! An unlucky 0.13 translates to about 88K viewers 18-34; we haven't seen 18-34s that low since the all-nighter experiment late last fall! Then again, to be fair we also haven't actually known an 18-34 at 2 AM in a long time either. Thank goodness my demographic, the 35-49s, picked up the slack, equaling about half the viewership for 12-1:30 AM, despite being slightly smaller (spanning 15 years of life as opposed to 17). Maybe going forward, Toonami will skew older after midnight?

Last Easter, Toonami didn't do great ratings but it DID have the special April Fool's Day event. Perhaps going forward it would behoove them to stick to special events on Easter Sunday? IIRC 2017 ratings weren't that great either. It DID have the JoJo double-header but otherwise was pretty much a "normal" night. By that definition, both the 3/30 and 4/6 lineups were "special" with their SAO double-headers, that really only did about the same or slightly better. Perhaps after the week of 4/13's "bumper" ratings, last week we were more or less back to normal with the exception of the 2 AM timeslot?

LOL, why not. I've always found it weird that they don't break for Easter, as it's a holiday where people tend to travel. I've often just gone to my grandparents' house, but others go very far. Perhaps the constantly-fluctuating date has to do with it?

Hopefully the majority of the drop was from Super to MHA and not MHA to Neverland.

Even so, the conclusion is clear: not even a Shonen Jump adaptation can refute Jman's claim that noitaminA series are ratings poison for Toonami.

Now now, I think it's too early to make a judgment call on The Promised Neverland, and it's FAR too early to make a judgment call on noitaminA. You know, when I first heard of the "noitaminA" block, I thought its thing, like Toonami's [as] incarnation, was "edgy" animation, but that's not it at all. It turns out at its inception, the shows were meant for women, as this article explains: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-mike-toole-show/2019-04-22/.145772

We did see a bit of this effect with Promised Neverland's first episode, as the number of female viewers edged out the number of males. But not so with the second, and it's also clear that effect might be moreso due to NBA Playoffs starting on 4/13 than it is Promised Neverland's female appeal.

TNT IS running an NBA Playoffs game this Saturday night at 1 AM, but I suspect that's a rerun. The actual games end by 11 PM, just in time for Dragon Ball Super, and there's no games on ESPN, so at least theoretically, Toonami should "rebound".

You get the significance of the GIF, right? Those are anime kids getting beat up by a basketball, and Toonami got its ass kicked by the NBA Playoffs. Just pretend they're from TPN.

The update is in, and the 8 PM power hour actually did somewhat admirably for once:

"Adult Swim’s line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at 0.34 and at 0.14/322K & 0.13/308K, compared to last week’s 0.36 and 0.09/260K & 0.12/297K, MY HERO ACADEMIA down 0.06 to 0.18/457K, PROMISED NEVERLAND down 0.04 to 0.15, SWORD ART ONLINE down 0.05 to 0.14, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE down 0.06 to 0.13/298K, BLACK CLOVER down 0.04 to 0.15/318K, BORUTO down 0.03 to 0.13/286K, NARUTO down 0.01 to 0.13/283K, HUNTER X HUNTER down 0.02 to 0.13/286K, and ATTACK ON TITAN down 0.03 to 0.10/242K."

Wow, that was pretty awful.

Of course, NBA playoffs and LivePD is going to pretty much annihilate everything else.

Still, putting Demarco on suicide watch, or at least keeping sharp things away from him, might be prudent.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Chad Clover.

With both shows having the lowest and highest retentions this week, this image is more prevalent than ever before.

This all begs the question as to WHY in the hell Black Clover was ever moved down. Is it somehow less appropriate to be on earlier than MHA? Both shows seem to both be TV-14 material, so that can't be it...

But if you think THAT was striking, just take a look at the 18-49 numbers, courtesy of...

DEAD LAST, get it?? Black Clover was the best retainer, but it didn't do THAT well when it was on at 11:30. It HAS improved a LOT since then content-wise, though. Turned out not to be the "cornucopia of crap" that people thought it would be when it first hit the block in 2017.

neither are TV-MA, and if they were that's only a problem at 8 pm.

JoJo’s Netflix numbers seemed to indicate Toonami was the problem, but we’ll see what happens when Stardust Crusaders hits.

I don’t know.  All I know is that Part I and II was put on Netflix and the social media mentions skyrocketed.  That and Netflix put it in their “top viewed” section.

As much as I enjoy watching JoJo on Toonami, I did buy (read: put on my Amazon Wish List for birthday gifts) the Warner DVD release of season 1, so there's definitely as much potential for success in the franchise outside of Toonami than there is inside.

Parts 1 & 2 also did better on Toonami than Parts 3 or 4, so that might be a factor.

I think Stardust Crusaders will hit the 'flix this summer.

Also, do they distinguish between subs and dubs in those "Top Viewed" sections?
