Toonami Ratings Thread 2.0

Welcome to the Football screen.  Hey I'm thinking of watching Toonami on my Football screen. I hear they got a great holiday discount on HD Football screens.

It's all about them 4K OLED Football screens now, you hear?

Also a rumor: CBS will broadcast the Superbowl in 4K with HDR. Only problem is other than Direct TV there's only like 2 cable providers with the ability to show it (and Verizon's not one of them so I'll go fuck myself).

Well, looks like this is the end of an era! DBS will probably do decent this week, but I'm thinking Boruto+3 will probably set a record low before Toonami goes exclusively late night once again next year.

its quite obvious how they need to schedule it 9pm til  2am don't waste money on repeats save it for something good

I was waiting to see what the new pre-Toonami schedule would be before saying anything about the schedule change.

8:00 - Dragon Ball Z Kai

8:30 - Dragon Ball Super (rerun)

9:00 - Ballmastrz: 9009 x2

9:30 - Rick and Morty

10:00 - Family Guy x2

Not too surprised they're keeping Kai at 8 PM, as outside of King of the Hill, which they no longer have, it has worked the best in that 8 PM hour. Adding a Super rerun should only help the hour as well, even though it's not the best for variety. 9 PM does mix it up a bit, but I can't see it doing great and that might get swapped out for a more consistent performer after a while. Rick and Morty and the FG hour should do well as always and provide the strongest lead-in to Toonami.

Basically from this, it's clear that the 9 PM experiment didn't work out the way they wanted to, as Toonami fans aren't inclined to tune in before Super starts. Therefore it makes more sense to get as many people watching Adult Swim before Super starts, and they plan to do that with their strongest comedy shows. They're falling back to what they did in 2017, which was the last time the Saturday night ratings were in line with the weekly average.

Very cool. I don't know why they keep putting non-R&M originals early on Saturdays, as pretty much every attempt to do so has ended in them being taken off after a few weeks. Remember when they tried Aqua Teen reruns at 8:30?

It's nice that they're keeping Kai on Saturdays while only taking the usual holiday break. DeMarco said that and Jack would be back soon, and he damn meant it. Speaking of which, [as] is doing a weekday strip of SJ on weekdays at 8:00 starting on New Year's Eve. This and an extra half-hour of [as] originals effectively replaces the double Super block from a few months ago, while Rick and Morty moves to 11:30. The new midnight schedule will now be a half-hour of Robot Chicken followed by Aqua Teen and Squidbillies, which is nicely nostalgic to when I first started watching the network. ^_^

Besides Rick and Morty they have very few options with programming Saturdays it seems. They have a limited number of American Dads and Bobs Burgers to use and they need very single one of them to program primetime during the week, especially with KOTH and Cleveland gone. I don't remember the setup from before, but they used to be able to use 2 of each every Saturday in 2015/16 leading into Family Guy which really bolstered the block up. If they really are serious about winning in primetime, they need these shows because nothing they own has ever worked in prime time. Its just not mainstream enough for that audience.

I fully expect the first week or two of this schedule to not do as well because of the Ballmastrz episodes and the fact that the comedy crowd will take some time to return after being totally off of Saturdays for 3 months. Once the inevitable Rick and Morty replaces the BM in 2 weeks, we could see the block get propped up a little bit more. Super will no doubt benefit from Family Guy in front of it, but are we still going to see an immediate huge drop going into Boruto? Possibly but I hope not

Well, what do you know? We're STILL gonna have 7 hours of animated action on [as] on Saturday nights, but only 6 will be part of Toonami.

I think double Family Guy may beat Dragon Ball Super premieres at times, but that's fine. DBS has already proved itself incapable of carrying the night on its own.

Interestingly enough, at one point in time, the schedule had FG at 8:30 and 11. Now those slots will be occupied by Dragon Ball Super.

Yeah they attempted to put the biggest shonen anime in the front, but clearly it turned out not to be the best decision in today's cable climate. I'm still  glad MHA is KINDA early, being at midnight now. But it sucks that HxH, arguably equal in quality and somewhat better written, has to be at 2:30 AM!! I complained about HxH treatment before, but this is the worst.

unless Ballmastrz is a precursor to The Boondocks airing before Toonami again, and yes it can air at 9 pm, i'm not really sure why they didn't just keep Boondocks at 4:30 and have Toonami be on from 10:30-4:30. We're about to have 2x Harvey Birdman/2x Mike Tyson Mysteries on sundays, 2x The Jellies! on fridays, and 2x Ballmastrz on saturdays. who knows what they'd replace it with, but Boondocks has historically worked as a lead in on saturdays and it'd be better than adding another Rick and Morty. Kai and Super at 8 is the best use of that hour, and it likely saves us from a Super rerun on Toonami when it ends. My Hero Academia Season 4 is probably just gonna take Super's slot at 11 in november.

so yeah, not really sure what the plan for 9 pm is but i feel like they probably should have just done this instead:

8:00 Dragon Ball Z Kai
8:30 Dragon Ball Super
9:00 Rick and Morty
9:30 Family Guy
10:00 Family Guy
10:30 Dragon Ball Super
11:00 My Hero Academia
11:30 Boruto
12:00 Mob Psycho 100
12:30 Megalobox
1:00 JoJo DIU
1:30 Black Clover
2:00 Hunter x Hunter
2:30 Naruto Shippuden
3:00 Attack on Titan
3:30 Pop Team Epic
4:00 IBO
4:30 The Boondocks
5:00 The Venture Bros.
5:30 Home Movies

Still a "force of habit" bump at 11 PM, but that episode didn't even win the night in 18-49: the 2 AM episode did! It's #87, which just happened to be the space poachers episode! Averages still below average for this year, which is probably one reason why the "all night" experiment is ending, but at least Dragon Ball hangs on to its "reruns" power hour at 8 PM, while Jack heads for 8 PM weeknights!

Going forward, I'll still be tracking DBZ and DBS reruns in that power hour, as well as Toonami proper. Not sure about Jack yet though.

Even with the power of a DB Super marathon, Toonami can't crack 500K in general. This might be the new normal... but the ratings will probably kick up a little when we go back to having the best possible lead-in.

are family guy fans and anime fans usually the same? i always found it odd considering family guy and anything on the toonami block couldn't be more different

It may not make sense but DBS following Family Guy does better than any other combination in recent years. DBS can in fact, out rate Family Guy reruns when Family Guy is right before it but DBS will not do as well without Family Guy leading into it. That implies a decent amount of cross-over audience.

Family Guy itself struggles to get 1 million viewers on weeknights at 11:30PM, given that it's unlikely DBS will break 800,000 with the upcoming schedule. I just hope it see's an increase that puts it on par with FOX reruns again.

Or we could bless Toonami with the wholehearted rapey goodness of The Rising of the Shield Hero!

Well, not really. But there's this huge discourse about the MC of the show having a false rape accusation put against him, so he ends up getting his comeuppance by, through a way I don't know how, getting the accuser's legal name changed to "Bitch". Also, he owns slaves.

I'm regretting that I ever predicted this show to air on the block at all. ¬¬

Well, I guess that's just what happens when you go up against the College Football Playoff Semifinal! In 18-49, the random crap after the marathon actually did better than the marathon average itself (120K). Of course, this was not the case with total viewers, which I guess means quite a few teens stayed up for the whole Boruto marathon.

This Saturday night, the (failed?) "all night" experiment ends (for now, at least) and a new era begins as Toonami gets its Family Guy lead-in back, so ratings SHOULD improve, even if most shows will be on an hour or more later.

Yep! Well sort of. The AOT marathon itself averaged 261K/140K 18-49, and the Boruto marathon averaged 269K/120K 18-49, but in both total viewers and adults 18-49, the DBZ Kai kickoff to the AOT marathon night edged out the Boruto marathon night.

So the 8 of those Boruto's did worse than the regular reruns of Pop Team Epic, Iron-Blooded Orphans and Samurai Jack in the 18-49 demographic. That's hilariously sad.

I'd have to figure the upswing in the back was due to a lack of competition as well as them being the most recent episodes. Boruto sure doesn't hold a candle to DBS. I do believe Toonami bet on the wrong horse this time.

Because I got a new computer with vastly different keyboard shortcuts than my previous one, and even when adding the G at the end of the URL to make a jpg, this board for some ungodly reason refuses to format it into a real image.

Here's a hot take: I don't think Toonami was wrong to push for Boruto when they did. Putting personal reasons for hating it aside, they mismanaged the block so we don't know what its true ratings potential is, and that's hurt it more than any of its actual content. Now that we have a more traditional Toonami block debuting this weekend, we'll see what happens

We don't know if they're getting S2 immediately. I think there's about a 50/50 chance it happens, and that's being a little generous. CR may not have gotten a good handle on producing dubs yet, but it's been long enough since the first season ended that it's reasonable they've already started assembling the dub cast for more recording sessions.

Cuts the lead over time significantly.  I don’t know if we’ll be seeing 2 immediately after 1 as a big order but 2 will probably be coming sooner rather than later.

Well, first ratings of 2019 are in, and while they're down from this time last year, they're also up from the end of last year BIG time!

Final-Cable-2019-05.SAT_.png

Deciphering these decimals, on 12/15/18 only Dragon Ball Super managed to crack 200K. On 1/5/19, shows as late as JoJo were actually in the 200K's.

Sorry, folks, but Toonami does better as a late-night block. However, if not for being buoyed by 2 Family Guy episodes at 10, I doubt we would have seen this.
