Toonami Ratings Thread 2.0

Recommended Posts

Ignoring my distaste for political banter in places where political banter shouldn't belong, just take a good look at this line.

6 hours ago, Blatch said:

One thing keeping me sane for right now is my belief that TOM should say "fuck Trump" on air, uncensored.

TOM would never say this. He has no reason to care about American politics. Steve Blum does. Jason Demarco does. But TOM does not. And even if he did, I doubt he'd even think of tainting what's meant to be five and a half - soon to be six - hours of him and SARA transmitting action cartoons to expectant viewers with the pettiest of insults.

So yeah. "Sane". :|

WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST SAY ABOUT KEEPING THE POLITICS IN DUMPSTER FIRES?

Seriously, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

When did you "just" say that? However, I agree. It should probably be better off kept there. The only time Toonami ever has anything to say even tangentially related is during homilies, which usually still tend to be apolitical.

Well, We Bare Bears did pretty good (560K/0.13 18-49) at 7 PM on Cartoon Network. Dragon Ball Super lost a lot of total viewers but tied it in 18-49 an hour later:

http://programminginsider.com/wednesday-final-ratings-dr-pimple-popper-on-tlc-is-cables-top-regularly-scheduled-original-telecast-among-adults-18-49-for-third-straight-week/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.378 million viewers (#89)
• 0.26 HH (#83)
• 0.13 A18-49 (#83)
• 0.14 A18-34 (#44)
• 0.13 A25-54 (#92)

American Dad (repeat) (ADSM, 8:30 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.510 million viewers (#71)
• 0.34 HH (#72)
• 0.23 A18-49 (#35)
• 0.26 A18-34 (#16)
• 0.23 A25-54 (#51)

...and then it got utterly destroyed by American Dad.

The day before DBS actually got over 100K more viewers, so maybe Frieza actually DID make a difference!

Blatch is obviously making a joke. He also knows TOM would never say this, not to mention how it's on cable where it's never aired uncensored, so why r you reacting as though Blatch DOES believe TOM would say this??

Aside though. Steve Blum's original directions for getting TOM's character down was to approach every line as though you're annoyed and about to say fuck. :D Reminded me of that.

Actually... yeah, that wasn't a good idea. And it does relate to my personal politics, even though they're a lot more complex than just hating the guy in charge of everything. I'll try to be less caustic when posting for right now. :S

No flaming, no trolling, no beating dead horses, no edit warring, no mind reading, no hacking no speaking in absolutes, no parroting viewpoints, no treating overall numbers as the only thing that matters, no saying the ratings are shit for something just because you personally dislike it, and most of all, no blatant lies about the TV content rating system. Ok, so no one's posted this yet...

http://programminginsider.com/live3-weekly-ratings-the-sinner-season-premiere-more-than-doubles-its-livesame-day-figures-in-overall-gains/

Dragon Ball Super (ADSM, Sat., 8/4/18 10:30 PM)
• Live+Same Day: 0.723 million viewers / 0.470 million adults 18-49 (0.36 adults 18-49 rating)
• Live+3 Day: 0.977 million viewers (+0.254M; +35.13%) / 0.623 million adults 18-49 (0.48 adults 18-49 rating) (+0.153M; +0.12 rating; +32.55%)

This is fairly important as it pertains to Dragon Ball Super's 528K/0.19 18-49 on Thursday:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-thursday-cable-originals-network-finals-8-9-2018.html

The 7 PM premiere episode of We Bare Bears (#90 Original) on CN only managed a 434K/0.09 18-49 an hour earlier. DBS shot up a full TENTH of a point! Go ahead and tell me it's not gaining an audience, because you'd be WRONG!!

However, Friday's episode was a different story...

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-friday-cable-originals-network-finals-8-10-2018.html

This time, the 7 PM WBB (ALSO #90 Original) did a bear hair better, 477K/0.10 18-49. DBS did grow the 18-49 audience from there considerably, but not the total viewership:

http://programminginsider.com/friday-final-ratings-telemundo-leads-prime-time-among-key-young-adult-demos/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.433 million viewers (#79)
• 0.27 HH (#79)
• 0.16 A18-49 (#49)
• 0.17 A18-34 (#23)
• 0.15 A25-54 (#72)

The Cleveland Show (repeat) (ADSM, 8:30 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.357 million viewers (#87)
• 0.25 HH (#83)
• 0.14 A18-49 (#67)
• 0.13 A18-34 (#42)
• 0.14 A25-54 (#79)

Sure did beat the crap out of the Cleveland Show though (the first episode; NOT the 2nd)!

8/9 #64 #67 #48 #17 #61
8/10 #79 #79 #49 #23 #72

Thursday did exceptionally well and is even beginning to steal Friday's thunder:

Dragon Ball Super Day-Of-Week Averages
DOW P2+ HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
MON 424,000 0.262 0.148 0.182 0.133

FRI 469,333 0.282 0.170 0.193 0.157

As you can see, though Tuesday is also a contender, Thursday now has the greatest Households average.

Finally, how did Week 6 as a whole stack up? Well, it wasn't the best, except in 25-54, and tied in HH:

Toonami is straight-up killin' it compared to what Chiller's 3-and-done Wednesday night block was doing 3 years ago, when Toonami was killin' it on a whole 'nother level with the conclusion (no pun intended) of KILL la KILL.

But yeah, faded glory compared to those halcyon days, but still doing well. DBS almost 800K, and Hellshake Yano and the conclusion of Stardust Crusaders still over 400K:

Final-Cable-2018-Aug-11.SAT_.png

It's not all good news though. DBS actually did 0.05 WORSE in 18-34 than last week; its second-lowest 18-34 number yet since it has occupied 10:30, and that is somewhat troubling. That said, it was STILL the #2 original in 18-34, and of course at 0.24 and up a tick to 0.25 respectively, PTE and JoJo did better than either show has since 7/7 (JoJo since 6/23). By my math, among cable originals, JoJo tied for 4th place with TNT's PGA behind Live PD, NFL, and DBS, and PTE checked in at 6th place. On the 18-49 front, DBS is up 0.02 from last week, and both PTE and JoJo are up from last week by 0.04 and 0.05 respectively, and furthermore have their highest ratings since 6/30.

It will be interesting to see how all the other shows that WEREN'T designated cable originals ended up doing, and we shall see soon!

Dude man the weeknight airings of Super have rolled in more ratings than Chiller's anime block EVER have, and now it's lasted twice as long!! THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT, Chiller, ......... Channel I Never Heard Of Before Than That You Apparently Never Market!

This isn't Toonami-related, but that Ducktales premiere, boy. It was the most dramatic and heart-wrenching of the show yet, so it's disappointing to see that it didn't get the ratings I hoped it would.

I think this is  just the new normal. Live PD is a breakout hit, no contest. The ratings are simply not going to be as high as they were. My concern is that the Turner execs are saying stupid things in public like "ratings don't matter to us". Ratings do matter to advertisers, who are more important to [as] than they are to Turner. Hearing network execs say stupid things in public is a quick way to get advertisers to take a second look.

I'm also kind of surprised that OPM didn't do well. BC seems to have fallen off some as well, which is disappointing since the episodes are actually pretty good.

Seeing that PPTP had a bigger audience than usual for Hellshake Yano warms the cockles of my heart. This is its best rating since the premiere... I mean, it doesn't completely matter, but when this show is nice, it's pretty dang nice, so it should be respected.

Week 7 of Dragon Ball Super on Weeknights starts out with a bit of a thud:

http://programminginsider.com/monday-final-ratings-nbc-leads-prime-time-in-viewers-and-adults-25-54-abc-tops-in-adults-18-49-and-adults-18-34/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.389 million viewers (#92)
• 0.25 HH (#91)
• 0.15 A18-49 (#84)
• 0.16 A18-34 (#52)

• 0.17 A18-49 (#72)
• 0.17 A18-34 (#47)

It's rare that DBS's 18-34 ranking slips below #50, but it happened Monday night at 8 PM.

A bit below average for a Tuesday, except in households and adults 18-34. Couldn't hold a candle to American Dad though.

So far, week 7 is quite unlucky, only averaging 397.5K. Let's hope it picks up!

OPM has the same problem as MHA, it's so popular that every anime fan and their dog has seen it multiple times, then seen 500 memes and 20 reaction videos about it.

I think Toonami is still struggling with the fact that the Inuyasha days are over... the days where you could run the same episodes of old anime dozens of times and still draw ratings.

Remember when they tried rerunning Jack at the top of the lineup? And AOT? They think old stuff and reruns will still draw, they don't.

Depends which metric you're talking about. If we're talking total viewers, then yes. If we're talking Adults 18-49, then no. Last week so far has averaged a 0.165, and every show beat that last week but Bebop. Even Thursday's high of 0.18 only beats the reruns after Shippuden!

For such an epic night in social media buzz (#JoJosBizarreAdventure hit #3, obliterating #LivePD, and #HunterXHunter and #AttackOnTitan trended as well), this is sadly disheartening:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-8-18-2018.html

Final-Cable-2018-Aug-18.SAT_.png

At least Dragon Ball Super won the night in M12-34 and tied for #2 in Adults 18-34. Oh, and everything DID make the Top 50 in Adults 18-49, so there's that. Attack on Titan did about as well as I thought it would. I'm thinking it probably didn't win its timeslot in Adults 18-34, but I don't guess that matters now.

As for wrapping up Week 7 of Dragon Ball Super's weeknight run:

http://programminginsider.com/friday-final-ratings-fox-lags-behind-a-mostly-rerun-filled-cw-in-prime-time-viewership/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.419 million viewers (#81)
• 0.27 HH (#79)
• 0.17 A18-49 (#55)
• 0.17 A18-34 (#30)
• 0.17 A25-54 (#71)

The Cleveland Show (repeat) (ADSM, 8:30 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.392 million viewers (#84)
• 0.27 HH (#79)
• 0.17 A18-49 (#55)
• 0.18 A18-34 (#22)
• 0.18 A25-54 (#69)

At least it beat the Cleveland show in total viewers, and tied it in households and 18-49. Recapping the week:

That huge number on Thursday was the 2nd-highest number of total viewers, and tied for highest households rating, but the demographics were merely above average, and the other days dragged the week down so that compared with previous weeks, Week 7 was merely mediocre-to-above-average:

Dragon Ball Super M-F Weekly Avgs
Wk P2+ HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
#1 453,800 0.283 0.150 0.173 0.143

#7 441,600 0.282 0.166 0.190 0.148

Finally, Thursday's total viewers average, households average, and 18-34 average have finally beaten Friday's:

Monday remains dead-last in every category though.

The Toonami crew either has really bad taste or is trying to cater to whatever the current generation likes. I don't blame them for the circa 2004-2008 choices because Cartoon Network was obviously forcing their hand to play most of that B.S. to move away from violent cartoons, but come on now there's been a shonen overload for a while, Dragon Ball Super is mediocre slop, and My Hero Academia is its best series, but honestly I'd give it a 7.5/10, but if you were between the ages of say 7-13, you'd think its great so far. Actually high schoolers will probably like it too, but full blown adults will think its semi-cool albeit standard shonen fare and the protagonist SUCKS, he really does suck, he's a pussy, I hate that he's the main character. I'd even prefer if the stereotypical, narcissistic douchebag with the faded blonde hair were the protagonist.

Not to sound like a broken record, but yes Hellsing Ultimate, Parasyte, Gundam Unicorn. Ok... those are solid choices. Shonen should be in the minority, second to adult shows like those, although Unicorn appeals to kids too. Yeah, I don't what the heck their problem is. Pop Team Epic, which probably cost $50 to make, is their 2nd best program. Nobody's watching that shonen slop after midnight. I'm about to tweet these dudes because they're acting quite beta, maybe a reflection of what the beta target viewers want.

Yeah and FLCL Regressive or Advanced or whatever it's called. Yeah great idea to spend money on that ever notice how the original FLCL and FLCL Progressive... sucked? Smh, can't believe these fools. Put me in charge of Toonami and we're playing a badass variety of alpha goodness 💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥

And what's sad is this is probably the most "current" the block has ever been. I mean, just look at the years each show's most recently aired episode originated IN JAPAN:

10 PM MHA - 2017
10:30 DBS - 2017
11 PM AOT - 2018
11:30 FLCL2 - 2018
12 AM PTE - 2018

12:30 JoJoDiU - 2016
1 AM HxH - 2013
1:30 BClover - 2018
2 AM N:S - 2011
2:30 OPM - 2015
3 AM Lupin - 2015
3:30 CBebop - 1998

Aside from Cowboy Bebop, these days Toonami is the 201X Club! Literally half the block didn't even exist in subtitles this time 2 years ago! And more shows from this year than any other year!

1 hour ago, brianycpht said:

Mitch didn’t include MHA in the update to Showbuzz, but I put in a request for it along with telling him the lineup starts at 10 now!

Actually, he added it, and I'm really hoping there's some kind of dyslexia here, or that they flip-flop the 2 shows again:

"Adult Swim’s late-night line-up had some more shifts, and performed as follows:  MY HERO ACADEMIA down 0.03 to 0.24/567K, DRAGON BALL down 0.06 to 0.32, ATTACK ON TITAN at 0.21, FLCL down 0.08 to 0.13/346K, POP TEAM EPIC down 0.05 to 0.14, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURES down 0.03 to 0.16, HUNTER X HUNTER down 0.03 to 0.16/379K, BLACK CLOVER down 0.03 to 0.15/366K, NARUTO down 0.05 to 0.14/320K, ONE PUNCH MAN down 0.03 to 0.14/287K, LUPIN THE 3RD down 0.06 to 0.11/245K, and COWBOY BEBOP down 0.06 to 0.10/230K."

Wow, just...wow. I'm at a loss for words.

8/18/18 - Total Viewers

DBS 704,000 124.16%
AOT 517,000 73.44%
FLCL2 346,000 66.92%

Lupin 245,000 85.37%
Bebop 230,000 93.88%

Strangely enough, even with the expansion, these were STILL only the 2nd-worst ratings of all time in total viewers!
