Toonami Ratings Thread 2.0

Recommended Posts

Yeah I'm very interested to see what the August and rest of Fall schedule looks like without Cleveland and the addition of all these new anime acquisitions. Block expansion does seem likely, especially since Saturday is going to need to fill those Cleveland slots and FG still can't be encored.

Expansion on 8/18 guess, with FG/Venture/Rick and Morty/FG as the pre-Toonami lineup and Ballmasterz/Venutre/Rick and Morty/comedy buffer as the post-Toonami lineup:

10:00PM - Dragon Ball Super
10:30PM - Boruto
11:00PM - Attack on Titan (10:30 until 9/29)
11:30PM - My Hero Academia (11:00 until 9/29)
12:00AM - FLCL Alternative (11:30 until 9/29)
12:30AM - JoJo Diamond is Unbreakable
1:00AM - Hunter x Hunter
1:30AM - Black Clover
2:00AM - Naruto Shippuden
2:30AM - Rerun
3:00AM - Cowboy Bebop
3:30AM - Lupin the 3rd

No expansion is tougher to work with, but still doable. They'd have to pull something else out of the comedy library to fill the pre and post Toonami slots in addition to the shows mentioned above.

10:30PM - Dragon Ball Super
11:00PM - Boruto
11:30PM - Attack on Titan (11:00 until 9/29)
12:00AM - FLCL Alternative (11:30 until 9/29)
12:30AM - My Hero Academia (11:00 until 8/18, 12:00 until 9/29)
1:00AM - JoJo Diamond is Unbreakable
1:30AM - Hunter x Hunter
2:00AM - Black Clover
2:30AM - Naruto Shippuden
3:00AM - Cowboy Bebop
3:30AM - Lupin the 3rd

Good Lord, those were savage!!

http://programminginsider.com/live3-weekly-ratings-yellowstone-tops-in-raw-gains-among-all-scripted-fare/

Dragon Ball Super (ADSM, Sat., 7/14/18 10:30 PM)
• Live+Same Day: 0.750 million viewers / 0.439 million adults 18-49 (0.34 adults 18-49 rating)
• Live+3 Day: 1.026 million viewers (+36.80%) / 0.638 million adults 18-49 (0.49 adults 18-49 rating) (+45.33%)

At least Super still cracks a million in Live+3. I can hardly wait until Toonami expands to 10 PM so we can track TWO shows' Live+3 numbers--if it even happens, but I don't see how the hell else we've got room for FLCL Alternative at 11:30!

Final Cable 2018 Jul 21.SAT

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-7-21-2018.html

Remember when KILL la KILL continuously got over a million total viewers at 12:30? Owlchemist81 remembers...

At least DBS and PTE did a bit better in most demographics, although JoJo pretty much stayed flat. In 18-34, DBS tied with Live Pee-D for first place, while PTE tied with MOM at 2:30 AM on N-A-N for 3rd and JoJo tied with MOM at 3:04 AM on N-A-N for 5th. (Though MOM is obviously a rerun so why it's even on there is beyond me. What is and what isn't a "cable original" is poorly curated these days, as true cable premieres like MHA, HxH, Black Clover, and Shippuden never make this list anymore, and by all rights they should be).

It does pretty much baffle me as to why they won't just put the 2 Family Guys back-to-back, but insist on airing R&M between them. At least come August 11th one of those R&Ms will be 3-peat Venture Bros. instead. Looking forward to that!

I predict this thread won't continue anytime soon if it gets impossible to know how a show is doing through an old ratings system that doesn't take non-cable info into account. OR we just retitle the thread.

It's clear.  Even in this past month, more and more people continue to cut the cord.

It will be interesting to see what timeslot Attack on Titan Season 3 gets, and if that changes the game. Season 2 was somewhat disappointing at 12:30 but that was a different time and it had to follow Samurai Jack AND the Dragon Ball Hour. Season 3 will probably get 11 PM and only has to follow Dragon Ball Super. If [as] slots MHA ahead of it, they're morons! So I'd be inclined to agree with you but there is still that ace up Toonami's sleeve that SHOULD change the game for the better. If not, I'll probably drop following these ratings. It isn't so much that people are cutting the cord; the numbers for Live PD and MOM prove that. They're just not watching Toonami like they used to.

But one very pertinent purpose this thread also serves is to follow the weeknight ratings of Dragon Ball Super, for which Episode #15 is now available.

It's weird: AoT has all the ingredients for a hit on Toonami, but Season 2 just CRAPPED the bed when it aired! Almost as if anime fans were louder than even in this particular case that they would rather watch the sub anywhere else. And AoT Season 1 reruns were one of the big reasons Toonami's length was cut in half (though rerunning it at the front of the block wasn't a good idea anyway). I was even hesitant to think of the possibility Toonami would get Season 3 for that reason.

They will air AoT Season 3 after DB Super. I mean it's newer than My Hero Academia's early episodes by over two years, so it's more in-demand and fresher.

Good news, everyone! The rest of the lineup was strikingly resilient! Nothing below a 0.16 18-49 and only Lupin fell below 300K:

The Adult Swim line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL up 0.04 to 0.38, MY HERO ACADEMIA up 0.05 to 0.25/537K, FLCL up 0.02 to 0.20/399K, POP TEAM EPIC up a tick to 0.18, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE steady at 0.17, HUNTER X HUNTER up 0.03 to 0.19/391K, BLACK CLOVER up 0.02 to 0.19/382K, NARUTO up a tick to 0.19/388K, SPACE DANDY up 0.03 to 0.16/316K, COWBOY BEBOP up 0.04 to 0.16/305K, and LUPIN THE 3RD up 0.04 to 0.16/296K.

7/21/18 - Total Viewers
Show Viewers Retention
DBS 774,000 #DIV/0!
MHA 537,000 69.38%
FLCL2 399,000 74.30%
PTE 384,000 96.24%
JoJo 365,000 95.05%
HxH 391,000 107.12%

Shippuden 388,000 101.57%
Dandy 316,000 81.44%
Bebop 305,000 96.52%
Lupin 296,000 97.05%
AVERAGE 412,455 27th of 28

Still low but at least it's a step back in the right direction. Please, once FLCL Pro runs its course, NO MORE RERUNS AT 11:30!!!

So we're still at rock bottom eh? Btw the difference between FLCL and Shippuden 5 time slots behind it... 11k viewers.

I'm guessing this is the new normal. AOT S3 will probably do 5 percent better than MHA in the second slot.

Dandy continues to be the worst of the back end and I can see why, the second half of the season is just really weird and not usually very entertaining.

Says you and Jman, general consensus actually thinks its superior to season 1. And I'm inclined to believe them on that.

Since the second half has a lot of artsy and experimental episodes, there's a notable difference between the two halves which makes the show as a whole more polarizing. Personally, I prefer the first half, although the "second season premiere" with all the alternate universe Dandies is my favorite episode of the whole show.

That's a good one, the emo Dandy always cracks me up. I actually liked the hated singing episode. But Dandy overall seems to be very hit and miss.... and the second season seems to have more misses.

I agree, if only because I feel the only miss of season 1 was episode 12 whenever Scarlet was onscreen, and season 2 had both episodes 17 (at least, just the High School Caste System tune) and 19 miss for me pretty hard. The rest of the season, though? Crisis on Infinite Dandys, Masaaki Yuasa's episode, Kiyotaka Oshiyama's episode, Emperor JYB the rock star, the death planet, the date with Scarlet, the finale, even less obvious ones like the dance party and 2D universe episodes had their charms, so much so that I can't possibly call the back half of Dandy a bad season. Though I will say that the Groundhog Day on Meow's planet episode - my personal favorite - automatically makes season 1 better than 2.

Dandy seems more polarizing now than when it premiered. Jacob Chapman even wrote a whole article about how the directors now regret making it, which is heartbreaking.

Leave it to Elfie to make something sound five times more pessimistic than it actually is. ¬¬ If I remember correctly, the article was just them explaining that in spite of its consistent quality and giving the go-ahead for FUNimation's Simuldub initiative, Dandy was never as popular as its fans thought it was, let alone worthy of the position of being "the next Cowboy Bebop".

FLCL 2 was a mistake.

At this point, I actually don't disagree. I went from adoring the show after the first episode, even though it leaned too much on the original, to thinking it's merely decent. :|

FLCL 2 has all the trappings of a standard Hollywood movie sequel: very few major original ideas in favor of the exact same tone, elements, themes, plot, characters, acting, soundtrack, animation/action, and marketable elements as the first movie. I can say that FLCL 2 surprised me by being more faithful to the original than I expected, and because i loved that about the OVA, i loved that about FLCL 2, but it doesn't excuse the shortcomings, such as the animation downgrade.

Well, let's stop bashing the 2nd season of Space Dandy and get back to what this thread is all about: THE RATINGS!!

Family Guy (repeat) (ADSM, 10:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.801 million viewers (#37)
• 0.54 HH (#31)
• 0.37 A18-49 (#5)

• 0.53 HH (#32)
• 0.38 A18-49 (#3)
• 0.44 A18-34 (#1)
• 0.37 A25-54 (#9)

SO, Family Guy edged out Dragon Ball Super in total viewers & households, but Goku PWNED Peter in 18-49, 18-34, and 25-54!

And NOTHING under 200K 18-49, which I will show you later.

Cool--it's later!

That's really not too shabby! Also...

http://programminginsider.com/monday-final-ratings-abc-wins-prime-time-in-total-viewers-and-key-adult-and-female-demos-thanks-to-bachelorette/

Now THAT's interesting. American Dad actually DROPPED from Dragon Ball Super in everything but households and Adults 25-54, and Adults 18-34 actually took a HUGE hit of 0.05! Of course, the Cleveland show at 9 handily beat both in everything EXCEPT Adults 18-34. This may be just an anomaly but it almost seems like Shark Week took a big bite out of [as]'s ratings for the night and Super showed a surprising amount of resilience vs. that. Maybe this is something they should have tried a long time ago with DBZ Kai?

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-monday-cable-originals-network-finals-7-23-2018.html

Then again, maybe the culprit wasn't exactly Shark Week, but mind-boggling stupidity across MTV and VH1?

I just noticed an interesting quirk (with a lowercase "q") in the Friday schedule compared to all the other weeknights: Friday has only one episode of Bob's Burgers at 10:30, so it instead gets 2 episodes of the Cleveland Show and 2 episodes of American Dad. Last week, DBS beat its Cleveland follow-up, but ONLY in total viewers. ANNND, probably more important, [as] is losing the Cleveland Show soon!

I mean I support this move, but they should have playing the hell out of it all this time instead of infinite bebop reruns... unless they just got it back for the sole purpose of running it super late at night?

I wonder if this game will feature "vagina wedgies" in transformation sequences like the anime did, or that they'll censor that to reach a wider audience?

And by the way, why in the hell are we talking about video games in a ratings thread anyway? Except maybe that a 2nd season might spin off from the game? That would be cool. Oh, and I have no doubt in my head that Toonami will feature a review of the game at some point early next year! Hopefully this fight will be showcased...

BUTT, back to the ratings for Dragon Ball Super's still fledgling 8 PM strip, this time on Thursday...

http://programminginsider.com/thursday-final-ratings-cbs-leads-in-most-key-prime-times-figures-fox-tops-among-adults-18-34/

Dragon Ball Super (repeat) (ADSM, 8:00 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.466 million viewers (#75)
• 0.28 HH (#73)
• 0.14 A18-49 (#82)
• 0.16 A18-34 (#49)
• 0.13 A25-54 (#90)

American Dad (repeat) (ADSM, 8:30 PM, 30 min.)
• 0.526 million viewers (#66)
• 0.33 HH (#67)
• 0.20 A18-49 (#54)
• 0.20 A18-34 (#31)
• 0.20 A25-54 (#65)

In the battle between strongmen Goku and Stan Smith, Smith wins again for the 2nd day in a row after Goku pulled a 3-day upset streak. And the weekly leaderboard shapes up like this:

Dragon Ball Super M-F Weekly Avgs
Wk P2+ HH 18-49 18-34 25-54
#1 453,800 0.283 0.150 0.173 0.143
#2 456,000 0.288 0.174 0.216 0.148
#3 438,800 0.264 0.152 0.184 0.132
#4 430,000 0.263 0.155 0.190 0.140

As the colored formatting suggests, most of the demos have actually grown slightly from week 3 to week 4, even if overall viewers and households have declined slightly, making week 4 the series' low point in the overall numbers so far. But week 4 is incomplete, with Friday left to go. Will Friday's numbers cause week 4 to rise up and challenge week 2's dominance? It should also be noted that week 2 was essentially a comedy of errors to prevent a high-stakes disaster with a few cameo battles from the likes of Buu and Gotenks, while week 3 was a more traditional battle-heavy batch of episodes after Goku gained his god form for the first time, with the exception of Friday's, which began the transition between the Beerus and Frieza arcs and saw Mr. Satan as the real star, though bumblingly so.

I hear the developers of the Little Witch Academia game (Chamber of Time) didn't make a very good game from a review i watched, and I bring that up because they are doing this KLK game too, so I now have reservations on it.

I'm not as focused on the weeknight ratings as I am for the weekend ones.

Part of the reason I posted it is because it looks awful. That's the best they can do for a 2019 release? Plus... the anime is from 2013.... and they're just now making a game about it? When I saw it I thought it was some game from years ago that I had just been unaware of.

Hmmm...I'll just leave this here...

Is this ratings related? Looks like a schedule related thread that has nothing to do with ratings. Better make a separate thread!

Schedule changes are sorta related because they're often based on ratings. Plus, remember the ratings One-Punch Man got last time it was on the block? It frequently made the Top 100 programs across all cable on SUNDAY! It seems Toonami is trying to capture that lightning in a bottle again, but will we bite?

Sir .... sir.....your original post made no mention of ratings I'm going to have to ask you to take that down and move it to a special thread just for scheduling and scheduling related accessories.
