Toonami Ratings Thread 2.0

Parts 1 & 2 also did better on Toonami than Parts 3 or 4, so that might be a factor.

I think Stardust Crusaders will hit the 'flix this summer.

Also, do they distinguish between subs and dubs in those "Top Viewed" sections?

Parts 1 and 2 aired when Toonami's ratings were actually high.  So it can apply to ANY show they aired during that time really.

I've only seen one episode of Shuffle!, and let me tell you, Lisianthus is best girl.

You should watch shuffle. How often do you get to see a harem anime where the guy actually picks a girl?

Interesting report this morning:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-5-4-2019.html

Final-Cable-2019-May-04.SAT_.png

Despite the Star Wars-themed lead-in to Toonami, real Star Wars: Rogue One overlapped Toonami's 11 PM hour and it shows. The 12 AM hour didn't do all that great in total viewers. Would it have really killed TBS to have started the Star Wars Marathon an hour earlier for SOME semblance of synergy!? You would think Super might beat the earliest episode of the marathon in 18-49, but no dice. Also, these episodes of Dragon Ball Super getting a normal, bland promo kinda hurt too. Hopefully they don't make that mistake with the (current) series finale in October or November.

However, DAMN! For all the issues with total viewers and 18-49, that episode of Dragon Ball Super placed 2nd in Adults 18-34 and WON THE NIGHT BY A WIDE 0.14 MARGIN in Men 12-34!! And a sustained 0.25 throughout the night at least until 2:30 AM in 18-34 is a beautiful thing to see these days. Finally, note the balance in Females 12-34 and Males 12-34 for The Promised Neverland and Sword Art Online: Alicization--the latter led by a mere 0.01! That's the noitaminA effect for you, and it indubitably caused the 18-34 numbers to be quite a bit higher!

While it is overwhelmingly clear by these numbers that this time the older adult crowd, perhaps even beginning at age 25, overwhelmingly preferred Toonami's competitors Live PD and Rogue One, it should also be noted that the 12 AM-1:30 AM total viewer numbers and Adults 18-49 numbers WERE markedly higher than their counterparts last week. We'll just have to wait to see if that was true for the rest of the block when full numbers come in!

If you expected huge numbers for last week's episode of Dragon Ball Super, pat yourself on the back. But the 2nd-highest [as] show is surprising, and probably due in part to an accidental omission:

Final-Cable-2019-May-11.SAT_.png

Just barely edged out by Live PD in 18-34 and EASILY winning the night in Male 12-34, rising 0.05, was Dragon Ball Super, but JoJo not only captured 2nd best of the night, it also TIED in Male 12-34 with Live PD! However, of course it was edged out by Promised Neverland in 18-34!!

Speaking of 18-34, Dragon Ball Super actually pulled off back-to-back weeks of over 0.45, which translates to an estimate of over 300K!! That would not have been possible if DBS had been aired on Toonami as a 1-hour special like it was in Japan.

Of course, the error is the fact that SAO was not included in this chart. This also happened with the final episode of KILL la KILL back in 2015 and has also befallen Black Clover since it fell from the 11:30 slot. Whether this was just an error or will be the case going forward is unknown.

Anime Basketball GIF - Anime Basketball Hit GIFs

Even though Dragon Ball Super went up against the 1st-round knockout punch to the jaw that was the Wilder-Brazeale (sic?) fight, it still somehow managed to best it in adults 18-49. And to be fair, the 18-49's weren't THAT bad, but the total viewers and 18-34s were scary low. We're talking <100K for SAO-A and JoJo. It's a shame that it takes an event like Goku vs. Jiren to carry the block these days; let's hope the premiere of new AOT will do the trick next week, and MHA won't enfeeble the block as a lead-in. But it can only go up from here, right?? Toonami doesn't have any strong competition against pro sports anytime in the near future. I don't think baseball games can hurt the block this bad, and yes, the NBA Finals are coming up, but none of the games are on Saturdays:

Spoiler
Game Date Home Team Result Road Team
Game 1 Thursday, May 30 Winner of Eastern Conference Finals   Golden State Warriors
Game 2 Sunday, June 2 Winner of Eastern Conference Finals   Golden State Warriors
Game 3 Wednesday, June 5 Golden State Warriors   Winner of Eastern Conference Finals
Game 4 Friday, June 7 Golden State Warriors   Winner of Eastern Conference Finals
Game 5 Monday, June 10 Winner of Eastern Conference Finals   Golden State Warriors
Game 6 Thursday, June 13 Golden State Warriors   Winner of Eastern Conference Finals
Game 7 Sunday, June 16 Winner of Eastern Conference Finals   Golden State Warriors

So, looks like if Toonami can manage its previous level of success with only one Family Guy as a lead-in, it should do fine. And of course, the hype of new dubbed AOT should do the trick. We just had to have THIS bump-in-the-road first.

Edit: Actually, that's NOT true. You better hope the Bucks sweep the Raptors from here on out or else, THIS will happen on the same night AOTS3 Part 2 premieres:

https://www.google.com/search?q=nba+playoffs+schedule&ie=&oe=#sie=m;/g/11h79jsb7j;3;/m/05jvx;dt;fp;1;;

At least this time it's on TNT, which never seems to do as much damage as ESPN. People leave it on that channel all night and watch SportsCenter ad nauseum, but TNT eventually turns over to reruns.

DEAD LAST! And this marks the first time this year the 18-49 average was under 200K, ending the Spring 2019 11 PM-4 AM era on a SOUR note.

For the time period from 2/16/19-5/18/19 that Toonami ran from 11 PM-4 AM, its average across all timeslots was 419,329 total viewers and 255,414 adults 18-49.

Toonami's average so far across all timeslots for 2019 is 407,684 total viewers and 247,198 adults 18-49. Though the move back to 11 PM was obviously damage control, numbers are still down from this time period last year. Hopefully regaining 10:30 PM will actually help things now!

I honestly don't think that matters anymore. The almighty NBA is more of a threat to Toonami's success than a holiday. Perhaps Toonami foresaw they'd just have to take the piss on this one and could claim higher ratings for 5/25 despite it being a "holiday" so they inked the AOT deal?

THIS JUST IN: Unfortunately, Toonami WILL be going up against NBA Playoffs East Game 6 (MIL vs. TOR). The game starts at 8:30 ET, so barring OT, it should at least be over by the time Dragon Ball Super begins.

I could care less about either team, so I will most likely be watching Toonami.

So Dragon Ball Super's premiere just barely edged out the 10:30 Family Guy in 18-49, and just barely lost to it in total viewers and adults 25-54.

Well, I guess this isn't TOO bad for a holiday. Dragon Ball Super WAY down, but still beat everything that wasn't NBA-related in Adults 18-49:

Final-Cable-2019-May-25.SAT_.png

JoJo actually DOUBLED its audience from week-to-week in 18-34, and all other shows following the returning Attack On Titan gained markedly in all metrics, though Dragon Ball Super before it dropped slightly in all except Adults 18-34 and Male 12-34. Boruto down to #55, but let's be honest: that was kind of a weak episode.

What's most striking is on a year-to-year basis, we're STILL down, even up against a mega-rerun FLCL Season 1 marathon. Following the "All-Night Toonami Experiment" which saw Toonami take over prime time with Narutoverse shows which are currently relegated to 2 AM, this SEEMS good, but the FLCL marathon was pulling over one-third greater on average in Adults 18-49.

Still, Attack on Titan clearly showed a "lifting" effect for the shows which followed it, and of course it outdid MHA the week before. This is a positive trend, and it will be interesting to see how the block does in June once it gets out of the "shadow" of the NBA. No Finals games will be occurring on Saturday nights:

Spoiler
Game Date Home Team Result Road Team
Game 1 Thursday, May 30 Toronto Raptors   Golden State Warriors
Game 2 Sunday, June 2 Toronto Raptors   Golden State Warriors
Game 3 Wednesday, June 5 Golden State Warriors   Toronto Raptors
Game 4 Friday, June 7 Golden State Warriors   Toronto Raptors
Game 5* Monday, June 10 Toronto Raptors   Golden State Warriors
Game 6* Thursday, June 13 Golden State Warriors   Toronto Raptors
Game 7* Sunday, June 16 Toronto Raptors   Golden State Warriors

While they'll be giving hell to the Jellies, they won't affect Toonami!

Yeah, that's not bad. At least a hell of a lot better than last week! Just to be fair, it should also be noted that DBS through GMP (146K 18-49) actually outdid last week as well (18-49 average 222K).

MHA lost a lot from Family Guy, but DBS gained all that back and more to easily win the night in all known categories! And SAO, JoJo, Shippuden, and HxH were also strong retainers!

One last parting shot before I close the book on this week:

So, basically the NBA whooped on everyone's ass the past couple weeks. Figures.

Oddly enough, the LivePD-esque spinoffs are starting to appear, and disappear, so Live PD might be entering the mid-life phase of TV shows, and thus a lower rating share.

Problem is, Toonami doesn't have a strong draw to gain a portion of that share.

DBS and maybe AOT, but little else until possibly new MHA. Gundam is cool, don't get me wrong, but unless it has a thot in a tank top doing commentary it just isn't a draw.

Example:

57040221_2305281119687222_77942909933760

It's a gundam, but eh....

maxresdefault.jpg

Look, lots of Gundams, and a mystery box. Interest piqued.....

Spoiler

Yeah, the "gundams"....

Final-Cable-2019-Jun-01.SAT_.png

Boruto was off the chart at #66 with a modest 206K viewers and a 0.11 in 18-49.

Clearly, having MHA lead Toonami isn't working out for Toonami...but wait! Didn't MHA also lead Toonami during the period last August and September when Attack on Titan impacted THAT schedule as well? If so, then what's the difference? Two Family Guys instead of one? And what does this mean for the future when there won't even BE a Family Guy?

Oh well; at least there's always American Dad to fall back on, I guess. They're gonna have to renegotiate contracts to get more weekly AD to pull that off though. Currently it's maxed-out Monday-Friday so they can't even play an episode on Saturday.

So this situation with MHA leading at 10:30 has got me thinking that the ultimate plan may to try and inch back to a 10pm start time and have the block end at 3. For some reason I have a feeling about this

In this scenerio, HxH will be replaced by a new show that airs at 11 and MHA and DBS are moved back....

I'm hoping that they realize the error of their ways and add an hour of Family Guy back in and sacrifice the Super encore or a Rick and Morty.

Without FG [as] is basically doomed. Their original programming, R&M aside, is utter trash, and Toonami is lacking in terms of serious draws beyond DBS.

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me to find [as] ending up as a streaming only block in two or three years.

I disagree. I think Adult Swim CAN survive on its own without Family Guy or, for that matter, Bob's Burgers, but it REALLY needs to bone up on its successful originals and American Dad to do it.

I also believe limited sports programming, such as NCAA Basketball, may be a possibility in the future, especially with TruTV's future uncertain, and most of its more popular shows like Impractical Jokers and Adam Ruins Everything easily transferrable to TBS. If that sounds like a stretch, might be neat to have the voice actor of a popular CN/[as] show on color commentary.

[as] was largely grown from being the only place that aired FG. They added a couple good comedy shows, tossed in an anime or two and made a really unique block. Since those earlier days they have not gotten anything really good to serve as a draw. FG is everywhere now. The uniqueness which served as a draw is gone. That leaves [as] with R&M, if or when that ever gets going to any real degree (yes I know season 4 is coming), and what else? Their other originals are generally trash. They could have had Archer, which would have been a good fit, they passed on it. FX(X) now has it and it did quite well. [as] has nothing like that which is reliably new and popular to serve as an anchor draw. Toonami is in the same boat, DBS is ending comparatively soon, and beyond that what do they have? Jojo shits the bed, Boruto stunk up so badly it got exiled, Black Clover might have worked but it got handled poorly to the point where it has been hobbled, and their original programming consisted of a pair of sequels no one wanted or watched, and Space Dandy, which was good but niche in a niche genre. We do't have much to look forward to, beyond the Blade Runner show, which I have high hopes for.

The ratings bear it out, [as] as a whole is down, and Toonami was really only ever supposed to draw a certain target audience, it was never a general audience block. Toonami's ratings will continue to fall because it is linked to [as], and [as] will continue to see ratings decline because [as] is green-lighting trash.

You're not completely wrong. It's STILL doing well on FXX! It actually beat its timeslot on its "older sister" network FX!

Spoiler

Final-Cable-2019-May-29.WED_.png

Now, that doesn't beat what Family Guy is able to do in that timeslot on Saturday nights leading-in to Toonami; nor does it beat what Dragon Ball Super did the last 2 weeks, but still, it's pretty competitive! It did certainly beat what AOT did in most recently in total viewers and Adults 18-49 (but NOT 18-34)!

Ok, so getting back to the RATINGS, this week wasn't that bad, but it wasn't great either:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-6-8-2019.html

Final-Cable-2019-Jun-08.SAT_.png

Toonami did decent against fairly weak competition; its biggest competitors were perpetual thorn in its side Live PD and, oddly enough, GOTG2 on TNT. But while the latter beat DBS soundly in 18-49,  it lost to it in 18-34, though their timeslots didn't necessarily overlap. Live PD's did, however, and as usual it wreaked havoc on MHA, DBS, and AOT. It would be interesting to see if MHA lost to the aggregate average of GOTG2 on TNT in 18-34, but who knows if we'll ever get to.

The real story on this night may not even be on this chart, however. UFC prelims got its butt kicked by Super, but the real UFC 238 show would be on ESPN+ later that night and directly competing with Toonami. While ESPN does not report its ESPN+ viewership, it's pretty clear who lost that fight in 18-34 and male 12-34. When the gap between male 12-34 and female 12-34 viewership is that close, it's clear the boys and guys were elsewhere.

At least Toonami is doing better than most other original animated programming on other networks on other nights of the week:

Even Boruto kicked Archer: 1999's ass in total viewers this week, though Archer did beat it 3 days earlier in Adults 18-49. Lost hard to everything else in other key demos though!

Hey, so Toonami did pretty good in key demo, getting shades of green for DBS, AoT, PN, SAO and even Jojo. Total numbers might not be that high, but the share of audience was much better than what has been happening in past weeks.

I'm assuming it's probably mostly the Fox News crowd that watches it, considering their obsession with law enforcement. Maybe I'm alt-wrong.

But I personally don't find the concept all that interesting the few times I actually watched it on Friday (it's just like live Cops), and it has actually had an effect on the way law enforcement is carried out in several PDs that "star" its cops.

Plus its rise as a perpetual competitor to Toonami happened about the beginning of the Trump presidency, around the time Toonami's ratings went down.

Hey, so Toonami did pretty good in key demo, getting shades of green for DBS, AoT, PN, SAO and even Jojo. Total numbers might not be that high, but the share of audience was much better than what has been happening in past weeks.

No.

No it isn't.

I suppose you're right. But the reason the green returned was competition wasn't as tough. The previous 3 weeks, Toonami competed with the NBA Playoffs and the Stanley Cup. That threw off the scale for dark green so much Toonami couldn't achieve the green tint as easily.

Fair enough. I have removed that phrase from the post.

.... Live PD is alt-right??

Not necessarily. It is pro-cop, but that's a different sin.

Just my two cents. I'm not intending to continue a flammable conversation. Regarding the ratings, they're lower again, which always seems to happen whenever Toonami moves up the whole block. Maybe they'll stabilize again if they let it stay this way for a few months, but my more cynical mind thinks it'll be messed with again beforehand.
